Colo. Indoor Tanning Bill Clears Another Hurdle

On March 13, the Colorado Senate Health and Human Services committee passed HB 1054, a bill that would completely ban minors from using tanning salons. Introduced by Representative Cherylin Peniston and Senator Lois Tochtrop, HB 1054 passed by a vote of 4 to 2. Now, the bill is being referred to the Committee on Appropriations.

Colorado Tanning Bill Moves to Appropriations

On Feb. 6, Colorado’s House Health, Insurance and Environment Committee passed HB 1054. The bill, sponsored by Representative Cherylin Peniston and Senator Lois Tochtrop, prohibits the use of commercial UV-emitting tanning facilities by anyone under 18 years of age.

Colo. Senate Passage of Tanning Bill Disappoints

Cancer organizations were disappointed by the Colorado Senate’s recent vote on indoor tanning legislation. On April 30, the Colorado Senate passed HB 1215 by a vote of 19 to 16. The bill, sponsored by Representative Cherylin Peniston, prohibits the use of commercial UV-emitting tanning facilities by anyone age 14 or under except with a physician’s prescription. In addition, parental permission is required for children age 15, 16 and 17. The bill narrowly missed being defeated by two votes.

Colorado Tanning Bill Heads to Full Senate

In a 4 to 3 vote, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee passed HB 1215. The bill, sponsored by Representative Cherylin Peniston, prohibits the use of commercial UV-emitting tanning facilities by anyone age 14 or under except with a physician’s prescription. In addition, parental permission is required for children age 15, 16 and 17. The bill will soon be taken up by the full Senate.

On February 26, Colorado’s House Labor, Economic, and Workforce Development Committee held a hearing on HB 1215. The bill, sponsored by Representative Cherylin Peniston, prohibits the use of commercial UV-emitting tanning facilities by anyone age 14 or under except with a physician’s prescription.
