Research Roundup: Indoor Tanning

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Though it is one of the most preventable types of cancer, many people do not take the necessary precautions in the sun to protect their skin. What’s worse is that individuals (particularly, young women 16-29 years old) seek out tanning beds to get a tan, relax, and even improve their mood. Indoor tanning has been linked to more 450,000 non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) and 10,000 melanoma cases worldwide. Four recently published research articles addressed indoor tanning.  The following is a synopsis of this research:

Sun Safety and Social Media – Using Hashtags for Health

The topic of sun safety has gotten national media attention since the Acting U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Boris Lushniak, announced the Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer last Tuesday, July 29th. In addition to the Call to Action itself, which is over 100 pages long, there are abbreviated materials for sharing the message with consumers. These materials include the 10-page Consumer Booklet, the 2-page Quick Facts, and even shorter 140-character Tweets.

Surgeon General Says “UV Bad”

Today for the first time ever, the Surgeon General of the United States publically acknowledged that “ultraviolet radiation is bad; protect yourself!” In a webcast from Washington D.C., Dr. Boris Lushniak, Acting U.S. Surgeon General, released an historic 112-page report called the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer.

Ontario Bans Tanning by Minors; Colorado Doesn’t

Effective May 1, 2014, the province of Ontario, Canada will be banning all youth under the age of 18 from using commercial indoor tanning facilities. Now there are five Provinces in Canada with similar laws. CBC News has posted an interactive map of sunbed laws in Canada.

Colorado Tanning Bill Moves to Appropriations

On Feb. 6, Colorado’s House Health, Insurance and Environment Committee passed HB 1054. The bill, sponsored by Representative Cherylin Peniston and Senator Lois Tochtrop, prohibits the use of commercial UV-emitting tanning facilities by anyone under 18 years of age.
